"KUMIHIMO" weaving originated in Japan many years ago. Actually it was a weaving technique that was used entirely with silk cords and done on a round wooden unit something like a doughnut that was perched up on long wooden legs. Each silk cord was weighted down with sand bags for tension and the woven cord that was made through the crossing of the 8 or 16 cords of pure silk, in a specific pattern, wove a cord that dropped down in the center of the wooden doughnut hole. The crossing of the pure silk cords would continue until the main silk woven cord was a desired length.
Today the loom is not made of wood, but of a synthetic material and much smaller so it can be held in your hand and besides weaving in silk cords many now weave with beads of glass. When I was introduced to this technique I felt it would compliment the Precious Metal Clay jewelry that I make. Therefore I have woven several pieces for you to view. The findings (end caps, clasps, sliders etc) are all sterling silver and most hand made. They have been imported from Japan, China, and Thailand.
